A Sad Death

One of the saddest deaths which we have been called upon to chronicle for years was that of Mrs. Susie Mack, which occurred in Des Moines Thursday, October 15th, 1896. Mrs. Mack was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Breeding, of Handley, and wife of O. B. Mack, son of ex-county Supervisor Mack. She was a beautiful and accomplished young woman about 22 years old, and had been married but about four years. Mr. and Mrs. Mack and their babe moved from Winterset to Des Moines about three months ago. Recently they were both taken down with typhoid fever. Mrs. Mack became so bad it was impossible to remove her and she remained in Des Moines under the care of her parents, who went there to care for her. Mr. Mack was not so bad, and was brought to the home of his folks here, where he now lies very sick—so bad that he does not yet know of the death of his wife, although he makes frequent inquiries.

The funeral of Mrs. Mack was held at Blair Chapel, South township, Saturday, where the remains were laid to rest. The babe is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Winter, at St. Charles. The death in itself is sad, indeed, but the circumstances which prevented the husband from knowing of it, the sad parting in sickness of a loving young husband and wife to meet no more on earth, and the present dangerous condition of Mr. Mack, adds an intensity to the sorrow which to those bereaved is almost unbearable. The REPORTER sympathizes with the afflicted relatives, realizing that even the most sincere sympathy is cold consolation in such a dark hour.

Obituary.

Died.—At her home in Des Moines, October 15th, 1896, Mrs. Susie A. Mack, wife of Otto B. Mack, and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Breeding, of Hanley.

The deceased was born in Warren county, May 3rd, 1872; moved with her parents to Madison county when a girl. She was converted March 17th, 1879, at Blair Chapel and united with the United Brethren church, and lived a consistent Christian to the time of her death, when she expressed explicit confidence in the Christian religion and laid down this mantle to take up the crown. She was united in marriage December 24th, 1891, to Otto B. Mack. To this union were born two sons, Arthur and Bernal, the former having preceded her to the better world. She leaves a husband, father, mother, two brothers and a sister, and a large concourse of friends to mourn her departure. Susie was a great favorite among her young associates and her early departure only reminds us of the fact that “He who doeth all things well” can mould the young as well as the old for the kingdom above.

The funeral service was deferred until Sunday June 27th, 1897, when it was conducted at Blair Chapel by Rev. G. E. Bertch, of Sidney, Iowa whom she had requested should conduct the services before her departure.
