Notes of the Life of Shubal A. Ellis, Late of Madison County

Died, October 26, 1889, Mr. Shubal A. Ellis, at his home 2-1/2 miles north of Winterset. Mr. Ellis was born near Georgetown, Vermillion county, Illinois, on the 28th of May, 1834.

He came to Iowa and after studying law was admitted to the bar in Oskaloosa to practice in the circuit and supreme courts of the state. He soon after went to Kansas and with John Brown and Jim Lane joined in the free soil movement of that state. He was subsequently elected to the legislature of the state and also served as prosecuting attorney.

When the war broke out he came back to Iowa and joined the 8th Iowa infantry and participated in all the battles and hardships of that gallant regiment. A commission was tendered him but he said, "no, I joined the army to fight and I will go with the boys in the ranks."

In 1868 Mr. Ellis was married to Margaret A. Getchell and they settled on their farm near Winterset. In December 1878 Mrs. Ellis died, leaving two surviving children out of the four born to them.

Mr. Ellis was married again in 1882 to Miss Lillie Shepherd. Four children were born to them, all of whom are now living.

For some time Mr. Ellis' health has been quite poor, but no one expected his end was so near. On Saturday night at half past nine o'clock, scarcely warning even those watching, he passed away.

The funeral services were held in the Baptist church on Tuesday at 10:30. Many old soldiers, neighbors and friends were present to pay the last tribute of respect to the departed and tender sympathy to the bereaved family.
