Winterset Madisonian, Winterset, Iowa
October 1889

Stephen Pope departed this life October 22nd, 1889 at his home in Webster township. He was born in Sussex, England, A. D. 1809 (July 23) and in the year 1834 he emigrated to America, landing in the state of New York. Here he engaged as a laborer for seven years.

In 1841 he was united in matrimony to Miss Catharine Eliza Egabroad, following this union he commenced farming for himself. In the year 1846 they moved to Illinois, they remained there until 1857, they then moved to Madison county, Iowa and settled on the land where we now find them, and by patient toil and industry they have built them a good comfortable home.

They united with the Evangelical church in the year 1865 and uncle Stephen remained a faithful member of this church until death called him. His funeral services were conducted by the Rev. H. C. Preston, and here let us note a peculiar trait in the character of these people, they never had a family quarrel or dispute in all of these years of wedded life. But his work is finished and his family loses a dear relative and the community a good citizen. (Buried in the Wight Cemetery)
