NEIL V. SCHARDEIN

Neil V. Schardein was born at Hatfield, Missouri on January 15, 1915 to the union of Demar and Bessie Carter Schardein. He passed away on May 26, 1983 at the age of 68 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines following surgery.

On February 22, 1936, he was united in marriage to Donna Edith Jones, also of Hatfield. The following June they moved to Earlham. To this union three children were born: Barbara Jean Mendenhall of Petersburg, Virginia, Beverly Alice Welshhons of Indianola, Iowa and Keith Leroy of Jefferson City, Missouri.

Neil was engaged in farming for 27 years. In April of 1963 he was employed by the Earlham Cooperative Elevator, serving 17 years and retiring from there in 1980. Neil was elected to the Earlham City Council in November of 1965 and served in that position until 1973 at which time he was elected Mayor, a post he held until his death. He was currently serving as treasurer of the Central Iowa Regional Housing Authority and was on the Board of Directors of the Dallas County Landfill. He was a member of the Earlham United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant sister and a brother, Dr. Raymond C. Schardein. He is survived by his wife, Donna, three children and their spouses, four grandchildren and one stepchild.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 29, 1983 at the Earlham United Methodist Church with Reverend Walter L. Sieck and Reverend Eldon Cold officiating. Music was provided by Donna Belle Miller, organist. Pallbearers were Stephen Hess, Richard Petersen, Jerry Lamers, Darwin Barnett, Bruce Koboldt and Paul Mark. Interment was at the Earlham Cemetery.

Schardein, Earlham Mayor, Civic Leader, Dies

Earlham Mayor Neil V. Schardein, 68, who had served in Earlham city government since 1966 and helped in developing many capital improvements, died Thursday, May 26 of a heart ailment at Iowa Methodist Medical Center.

Services were held Sunday at the Earlham United Methodist Church and burial was in the Earlham Cemetery.

Born in Hatfield, Mo., Mr. Schardein was a longtime member of the Earlham community and began on the city council in 1965 and became mayor in 1973. During his time on the council, the first city hall building for Earlham was built adjoining a new fire station. He was also a councilman when a new water tower and sewer lagoon were constructed.

He served Earlham has representative with the central Iowa Regional Association of Local Governments and was treasurer with the CIRALOG housing authority. He was chairman of the board of the South Dallas County Landfill Agency.

According to city clerk Carolyn Treadway, Council will meet June 6 and probably appoint a new mayor. In the meantime, may oral duties are being carried out by mayor pro-tem Richard Petersen. She said residents may petition for an election within 14 days if the council decides to appoint a mayor. She noted the municipal election will be held this November.

Survivors include daughters, Barbara Mendenhall of Petersburg,Va., and Beverly Welshhons of Indianola; a son Keith of Jefferson City, Mo., and five grandchildren.

The family suggests that any memorial contributions be made to the Earlham United Methodist Church or the Earlham Recreation Park Project.
