LEVI S. RAY, 75, DIED HERE SUNDAY

Funeral Rites Held Tuesday With Burial in Sayre Cemetery

Levi S. Ray, one of Madison county's most honored citizens, died at the Winterset hospital Sunday. He had been in failing health for several weeks but his fatal illness was of brief duration. He was 75 years of age.

Mr. Ray was a member of a pioneer Madison county family. He was born Sept. 7, 1863, the son of Levi and Frances Ray. His active life was spent as a farmer in Scott and South townships. He was always identified prominently with the affairs of his community. He filled several offices as township clerk, township assessor, and census enumerator, and exerted considerable influence in the affairs of the county.

He was a prominent member of the Methodist church, and was affiliated with the Odd Fellows and Modern Woodman lodges.

He was married on April 3, 1884, in Winterset. They were the parents of five children, the eldest of whom, Frank Ray, died in 1922. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Mary Ray; four children, Fred J. Ray of Winterset, Mrs. Jenny Schmidt of Knoxville, Carl Ray of St. Charles, and Mrs. Beulah Alcox of South township; and two grandchildren, Majel Ray of Des Moines and Max Ray of St. Charles.

Funeral services were held Tuesday from the Ramsey-Richards funeral home in charge of the Rev. A. R. Weed of Carl, assisted by the Rev. J. R. McNichols, pastor of the Winterset Methodist church. Burial was made in the Sayre cemetery.

MORTUARY

Levi S. Ray, son of Levi and Frances Ray, was born Sept. 7, 1863, and departed this life May 14, 1939, at the age of 75 years, eight months and seven days.

He joined the Methodist church at Elm Grove when a young man, and recently transferred his membership to Winterset.

He was united in marriage to Mary Beem April 3, 1884. They celebrated their fity-fifth wedding anniversary last month.

To this union, five children were born. The eldest son, Frank, preceded him in death Feb. 11, 1922.

He leaves to mourn his departure his wife and the four remaining children, Fred J. of Winterset, Jennie Schmidt of Knoxville, Carl G. of St. Charles and Beulah Alcox of Winterset; two grandchildren, Majel Ray of Des Moines, and Max Ray of St. Charles; one brother, Joe Ray of Peru; and many other relatives and friends.
