Thursday, February 1919BENJAMIN S. HIBBS
Into the home of Valentine and Lydia Hibbs in Guernsey County, Ohio, came their second child, Benjamin S. Hibbs on October 17th, 1851. Sixty-seven and a fraction of years was his allotted span of life, and on the 10th day of February, 1919 he passed out into eternity from his home in Earlham, Iowa.
When the baby was six months old the family came to Iowa, and a few months later settled at Bear Creek, which place, with the surrounding community, has remained his home almost continuously.
On February 3rd,1876, Ben was married to Mrs. Lou A. Carpenter. Into this new home circle came three daughters, Grace, Pearl, Madge, dying in infancy, and Hasel, whose beautiful life in the home and community was such a joy and benediction, even since her passing away five years ago. How the father loved and cherished his girls.
About thirty years ago Mr. Hibbs became a charter member of Gold Leaf, I.O.O.F. Lodge in Des Moines later transferring membership to Earlham. About twenty years ago he became affiliated with the Masonic Lodge here. He remained an active member of both.
Mr. Hibbs retired several years ago from business because of failing health. Three years ago he suffered a paralytic stroke, since which time he has been an invalid.
During his active manhood and also in the later years of affliction, it was his pleasure to aid in quiet, unknown ways those needy and friendless.
With loving patience, quiet fortitude and trusting faith, he has passed the recent years, leaving an assurance to those he loved that he had gone to join the dear daughters who were beckoning upward.
He leaves his devoted wife, two daughters, Mrs. Grace Meyers of Earlham and Mrs. Pearl Stewart, of Colorado; three grandsons, two brothers and three sisters.
The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church in Earlham on Wednesday, Feb. 12, conducted by Rev. J. B. Howard, pastor. This service was preceded by a short one at the home.
The Masonic fraternity attended in a body and conducted the surial service at the grave, Mr. Fred Nolte, of Stuart, in charge. Burial was in the Earlham Cemetery.
