Margaret Ellen Walters was born in Whitley county, Kentucky, Jan. 3, 1867. During her childhood her family moved to Winterset, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood. She was united in marriage to Benjamin Wesley Childress Oct. 14, 1886 and their union proved a very happy one.

Mrs. Childress is survived by her husband and one son, Clarence Pearlie. Another child born to Mr. and Mrs. Childress, died in infancy.

Mr. and Mrs. Childress moved from Iowa to Prowers county in 1904 and have since made their home here. Mrs. Childress was a loyal and devoted member of the Methodist church, with which she united at an early age. She became a member of the Lamar church during the pastorate of Rev. Auman and throughout her residence here she was active in all church and Sunday school work.

Her death came after an illness of only a few days and was caused by influenza. It was a shock to her devoted husband and her loving son as well as to the many friends who esteemed her so highly for her many good qualities.

The funeral services were held at the Methodist church on Thursday afternoon and were largely attended by friends in Lamar and the surrounding country. Rev. A. J. Waller, pastor of the church, officiated, and delivered a touching tribute to the memory of Mrs. Childress. Judge J. C. Horn, former pastor, and the Rev. T. F. Kelley of the Baptist church, assisted in the services. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery.

Besides her husband and son, Mrs. Childress leaves three brothers: Sherman Walters and M. A. Walters of Winterset and Weston Walters of Warrensburg, Mo., and two sisters: Mrs. C. M. McCleary and Mrs. E. N. Fields, both of Winterset, to mourn her loss.

Mrs. Benjamin Childress

Margaret Ellen Walters was born in Whitley county, Kentucky, January 3, 1867. Her family moved during her childhood to Winterset, Iowa, where she grew up to womanhood.

On October 14, 1886 she was United in marriage to Benjamin Wesley Childress. To this union two children were born, one on December 12, 1891, who died in infancy, and a son, Clarence Pearlie, on May 17, 1893.

She united at an early age with the Methodist Episcopal church at Winterset, and transferred from there to the M. E. church at Lamar on January 1, 1905, during the pastorate of Dr. Auman. She died on the 17th day of February 1920, after a short illness of influenza causing heart failure, aged 53 years, one month and seven days.

The funeral services were held at the M. E. church in Lamar at 2:30 in the afternoon of Thursday, February 19, and were conducted by Rev. Waller assisted by Kelly and Judge Horn. Interment was made in Riverside cemetery.

She leaves besides her husband and son, three brothers, and two sisters, S. Walters, and Mat Walters of Warrensburg, Missouri, Mrs. C. M. McCleary and Mrs. Carl Fields, of Winterset.
