DEATH OF MAX ORKIN

Former Winterset Merchant Dies at Sioux City

Word has been received of the death of Max Orkin at Sioux City. The Orkins and a half brother, Abe Levitt came to Winterset in the "90's" to engage in the merchantile business.

From a small room in the Centennial block on Court avenue, their business grew, necessitating a larger building on the north side of the square, and later to the east side where they occupied the building now occupied by the United Food Market, and also the building just north of the alley.

After leaving Winterset the brothers continued to expand, operating large establishments in Omaha, New York City, and Sioux City.
