MRS. MARY HANDEL 89, DIED APRIL 22

Fractured Hip, Suffered in Fall, Leads to Fatal Illness

Mrs. Mary A. Handel, one of the oldest residents of Madison county, died Saturday, April 22, at the Winterset hospital after a short illness. Mrs. Handel, who was 89 years of age, had resided here with a daughter, Mrs. Roy DeBoer, and had been in exceptionally good health, until Thursday, April 20th, when she fell and fractured her hip. She was brought to the hospital, but death came two days later.

Mrs. Handel was the former Mary A. Morris, daughter of Thomas and Martha Morris, was born at Owaneco?, Ill., Oct. 29, 1848. She was married there to J. C. Handel, Nov. 1, 1870, and they continued to make their home in Illinois until 1910 when Mr. Handel died. Since then she has made her home with her children and she came to this county with her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Roy DeBoer in 1930, when they located in Scott township, where they have since resided.

The Handels were the parents of seven children, five of whom survive the mother: Charles and Joe Handel, and Mrs. Roy DeBoer of Winterset, Ralph Handel of Glendale, Cal., and James E. Handel of East St. Louis, Ill. A son, Edward, died in 1924 and Herbert Handel in 1931. She also leaves seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Short funeral services were held at the Ramsey-Richards funeral home Sunday, April 23, and the body was taken to Owaneco, Ill where services were held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon. Burial was made at Owaneco.
