Dexter Library Obituary Collection
Dexter, Iowa

On December 16, 1939 at the close of a beautiful autumn like day at the end of the week, came the end of a beautiful earthly Christian life and Grandma DeVault slept peacefully into eternity and will be separated from loved ones on earth for only a short time. Her span of life was 78 years, 1 month and 13 days.

Minerva Jane Fuhrmeister, second oldest of the family of seven children of Charles and Emeline Fuhrmeister, was born on a farm near Ely, Iowa, ten miles south of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, November 3, 1861. There she grew to womanhood, attended the schools of Johnson County and Western College.

April 5, 1881 she was united in marriage with Chas. H. DeVault and immediately established their home on their own farm with God as their guiding spirit. When quite young she and her husband were converted and became members of the Evangelical Lutheran church. In 1892 they bought a farm 2 miles south of Penn Center and moved there, transferring their membership to the Penn Center Methodist church where they remained active members as long as they lived. This happy union was blessed with five children. The oldest daughter, Martha Smith, passed away on her first wedding anniversary which was Feb. 26, 1923, aged 27 years. Grandma DeVault was bereft of her husband June 11, 1924. She bore her joys and sorrows with equal fortitude, always concerned with helping others. Too many fine things cannot be said concerning this life which was so well lived.

She leaves to miss her sunny companionship 3 sons and one daughter. They are O. J. DeVault and Albert DeVault of Earlham, Clarence of Passadena, California and Mrs. Olive Wilson of Earlham, Iowa; 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. She leaves one brother, Albert Furhmeister of Churdan, Iowa and 2 sisters, Mrs. Emma Guess of Churdan, and Anna Whittington of Oakland, California with a host of friends who knew her and held her in the very highest esteem. Since her husband decease, she spent her time with her children radiating that cheerful influence in each home like the golden sunbeam. All of her children were with her during her last illness.

All that medical skill and tender care could do was done for her. She slipped away from earth scenes as quietly as she had lived, peacefully and quietly as the summer sun slips beyond the horizon to usher in another beautiful new day.

Funeral from Penn Center church last Tuesday at 2 P.M. conducted by Rev. J. H. Freedline.

Pall bearers were Guy Lenocker, Irwin Boyle, Harry Dunmire, Frank Leeper, Fred Imboden and Festus Mapes.
