Mrs. Mary Poffinbarger an old resident of Madison county, passed away at her home in Winterset, Monday morning, Feb. 26th after an illness of three weeks. Mary Smith, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Smith, was born in Marion county, Indiana, April 21, 1841 and died Feb. 26, 1912, her age was 70 years, 10 months and 5 days.

She came to Madison county in 1852 where she has resided, living most of the time in Jefferson township. She was united in marriage to Thomas J. McKenzie, who died Nov. 6, 1870. To this union six children were born, two daughters and four sons, of which two daughters and two sons preceded her to the realms beyond. Those living are William H. of Omaha and George W. of Winterset, who were present during her illness and death. She was again united in marriage in 1873 to Samuel Poffinbarger, who died in 1882. To this union one son was born.

Mrs. Poffinbarger has been a very devout follower of Christ her Savior from her youth and died happy in the triumphs of a Christian faith. She united with the U. B. church at North River class in 1888 under the pastoral labors of Rev. G. W. Vandewenter. She was always ready to do what she felt able to do to help the cause of the Master along. In the fall of 1910 she with her son moved to Winterset to live. To her son, John, whose health began to fail she gave all the love and care which only a devoted and loving mother could give. Faithfully she toiled almost to the close of her earthly life. She has gone to be with the loved ones in the happy realm beyond.

The funeral services were held in the North River U. B. church in Jefferson township on Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 28th, conducted by Rev. D. W. Swender. Interment made in the cemetery near the church by the side of loved ones. (Buried in North McDonald cemetery)
