John McLeod, was born in Scotland, in 1832. With his father he emigrated to America when a boy and first located in the state of New York. They removed to Madison county, Iowa, in 1855 and settled in Winterset. The father died many years ago.
After the war Mr. McLeod was married to Miss Sarah Iams. There were in the family five children, one of whom died in infancy. Four of these together with Mrs. McLeod, were present at the bedside of Mr. McLeod when he died at Santa Monica, Monday, March 30, 1908; they are as follows: Mrs. M. E. Smith, of this city, Norman, of Denver, Colo., Mrs. A. L. Houghtelin, of Twin Falls, Idaho, and Mrs. O. R. McLucas, of Omaha.
Mr. McLeod was a man of marked characteristics and of more than ordinary natural ability. Possessed of meager education, by his own unaided efforts he became possessed of wide and versatile information; we doubt if there was a man in Winterset who was better versed in history and natural science than he; he was also remarkably well-informed and theology and politics.
His mind was ever active and he was a conversationalist of rare ability and a debater of unusual tact and skill. He had a library which contained some of the rarest books, many of which had long been out of print.
His trade was that of a stone mason but in later years he abandoned it and engaged in real estate speculation in which he acquired quite a competency. In 1889 he removed to Fairbury, Nebr., where he remained till 1902 when he went west, residing for time in Washington, Oregon in various parts of California. In 1906 the permanently located at Santa Monica, California, where he died after about one year of failing health.
Of the many people who have lived in Winterset we doubt if there is another who was more widely known order will be longer remembered.
