MRS. J. H. JUNKIN DIED TUESDAY AT EARLHAM

Earlham--(Special)--Mrs. J. H. Junkin, one of the most widely known women of this community, died at her home here Tuesday afternoon after a short illness. She was taken ill Sunday and heart trouble developed.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Earl Schalkle and Gayle Junkin.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon from the Presbyterian church here.

Margarete Helen Kail, daughter of Henry L. and Nancy Brant Kail, was born January 19, 1868, near Neoga in Cumberland county, Illinois, and died Tuesday, January 10, 1939, at the age of 70 years, 11 months and 22 days.

She came with her parents in a covered wagon to Wayne county, Iowa, when she was seven months old. In 1875 she moved with her family to Madison county where she had resided continuously since. She was educated in the rural schools of the county, and had teachers' training at the Winterset Normal School. She taught in the country and later in the Earlham grade school.

She was married to J. H. Junkin December 15, 1898, at Earlham. For sixteen years they lived on a farm in Penn township, and then moved to their present home. Two daughters were born to them: Lucile Schalkle of Earlham, and Gayle Junkin of Avoca, Iowa.

Mrs. Junkin had been a member of the Earlham Presbyterian church since 1881, and was active in all departments, having served as financial secretary of the church and as secretary of Literature of the Des Moines Presbytery. She also fulfilled various offices in the missionary society and social circle as well as teaching a Sunday School class for many years.

She was also an active member of Marguerite Rebekah Lodge No. 233. Since coming into the order February 14, 1919, she had filled all local offices, served as District Deputy President, and twice as a delegate to the State Assembly.

She was interested in every endeavor for community betterment, and did her part in such organizations as the Sorosis study club and the Garden club. Cheerfully ready to help where there was need, she always showed a kindly sympathy and a charitable understanding in differences of opinion. Hers was a full life, beautifully lived for others.

Surviving besides her husband and daughters are her beloved granddaughter, Margaret Sue Schalkle; three sisters, Mrs. M. O. Evans of Helena, Montana; Mrs. B. N. Jewett of Portland, Oregon; and Mrs. C. A. Stanley of Wichita, Kansas; and a brother, Emmett E. Kail of Twin Falls, Idaho.

Mrs. J. H. Junkin died at her home here Tuesday at 1:15 p.m. after an illness of only a few days. Her condition became suddenly serious Sunday morning and grew steadily worse until a heart block caused her death. Mrs. Junkin was 70 years of age.

Funeral services in charge of Rev. Fink of Winterset were held at the Earlham Presbyterian church this afternoon (Thursday) at 2:30. Interment was in the Earlham cemetery.

The community is shocked and saddened by her sudden passing and extends its deepest sympathy to the family: her husband J. H. Junkin, Earlham’s mayor, their daughters, Mrs. Earl Schalkle and Miss Gayle Junkin and their granddaughter, Margaret Sue Schalkle.

Mrs. Junkin was an active member of the Rebekah lodge and was a member of the delegation of Earlham Rebekahs which attended a meeting at Patterson last Saturday night.

Resident Of Madison County Sixty-four Years. Dies Suddenly At Age Of 70

Funeral services were Mrs. J. H. Junkin, a resident of Madison county for the past 64 years, were held at the Earlham Presbyterian church Thursday afternoon, Jan. 12, conducted by her former pastor, Rev. W. P. Fink of Winterset, assisted by Rev. Overholser of Earlham. Mrs. Junkin died suddenly at her home Tuesday of last week from heart block.

Margaret Helen Kail, daughter of Henry L. and Nancy Eleanor Kail, Madison county pioneers, was born Jan. 19, 1868, near Neoga, Cumberland county, Illinois, and died Jan 10 at the age of 70 years, 11 months and 22 days.

She was married to John Holiday Junkin, Dec 15, 1898. For 16 years they lived on a farm in Penn township, and then moved to their present home and Earlham. Two daughters were born to them Lucille Schalke of Earlham and Gayle Junkin of Avoca.

Mrs. Junkin had been a member of the Earlham Presbyterian church since 1891 and was active in all its departments. She was also a member of Marguerite Rebekah lodge No. 233, and had fulfilled all offices of the order as well as serving as district deputy president and twice of his delegate to the state assembly, and took part in organizations such as the Sorosis federated study club and the Earlham Garden club.

Surviving besides her husband and daughters are her only granddaughter, Margaret Sue Schalkle; three sisters, Mrs. Mary O. Evans of Helena, Mont.; Mrs. B. N. Jewett of Portland, Oregon, and Mrs. C. A. Stanley of Wichita, Kansas, and one brother, Emmett E. Kail of Twin Falls, Idaho. Burial was made in the Earlham cemetery.
