George Joseph Gilbert, the second son of a family of seven sons was born to John and Annie Swartz Gilbert September 24, 1851 at Adrian, Michigan and departed this life March 19, 1939; age 87 years, five months and 23 days.

He grew to young manhood in Michigan, and came to Earlham, Iowa, in the year 1875. On September 17, 1876 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Houseworth, and to this union were born three sons, Frank, Ray, and Loyal all of Earlham. Mr. Gilbert's church preference was the Evangelical.

He leaves to mourn his departure the three sons and five grandsons. Mrs. Gilbert preceded him in death on August 6, 1927. And as these children return to their respective homes they will realize in full the extent of their loss; but to no one will this realization be so deep as to Frank who has never been separated from this father and who so devotedly set himself the task of comforting and caring for him through his lonely and declining years.
