Killed When Hit by Car As He Crossed Street in Mason City
V. E. Stanley of Winterset was killed at Mason City last week when struck by a car while crossing a street there.
Police reports indicated that Stanley was hit while crossing at a downtown intersection against a red light. The accident occurred on Tuesday night, of last week, and he lived until Wednesday night. He died in a hospital there of a fractured skull.
Stanley was 39 years old. He was well known in Winterset, where he had lived for a number of years. He had spent the summer in the northern harvest fields and was on his way back to Winterset when the accident occurred.
Stanley was the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Stanley of Earlham. In addition to his parents, he leaves 10 brothers and sisters: Frank Stanley of Earlham, Chester Stanley of Winterset, George Stanley of Stuart, Cletus Stanley of Cumming, Clifford Stanley of Dexter, Clifford and Wayne Stanley and Mrs. Frank Clemons of Earlham, Mrs. Leah Cook of Dexter, and Mrs. Helen Hougham of Ft. Des Moines.
Funeral services were held last Saturday from the Christian church at Earlham, and burial was made in the cemetery there.

Thursday, October 5, 1939V. E. Stanley Dies In Traffic Accident
V. E. Stanley was killed when he was struck by a car in Mason City on Tuesday of last week. Reports said that he was hit while crossing the street against a red light. He was taken to a Mason City hospital where he died Wednesday night of a fractured skull. He was 39 years old.
Funeral services were held Saturday in the Christian church and burial was in the Earlham cemetery.
Viret Emmanuel Stanley, son of Charles and Maggie Stanley of Earlham, was born December 14, 1899 and was accidently killed while crossing the street in Mason City, Iowa, when struck by a passing automobile; and lived about twenty-four hours after he was struck. He died at the Mercy hospital in Mason City, Iowa, September 27th, 1939; his age being 39 years, eight months and 12 days.
Cy, as he was generally called attended the public school in Pleasant Hill school. Cy worked at different kinds of work, in different places; and those who employed him always spoke well of his work.
He leaves to mourn their loss besides his father and mother a number of sisters and brothers. Viret was one of sixteen children; six of whom are deceased.
The three girls living are Carrie (Mrs. Frank Clements), Pitzer; Leah (Mrs. Walter Cook), Bear Creek; Helen (Mrs. G. M. Hougham, Fort Des Moines. There are seven boys, Frank and Chester, Winterset; George, Stuart, Iowa; Dr. Cletis, Cumming, Iowa; Clifford, Pitzer; and Ralph and Wayne, of Earlham, and a large number of relatives and friends.
Viret Stanley had many friends. He was friendly and sympathetic in disposition; and never forgot a kindness shown. He was his own worst enemy. He was over-generous, and would share his last dime with anyone in need. Irrespective of his condition in life he was uncomplaining, and always tried to make the best of everything.
His death was unexpected. His earthly life was short. It is but a step between time and eternity. “Be yet ready for at such an hour as ye think not the son of man cometh.”
Funeral services were conducted in the home and in the Earlham Church of Christ by A. N. Simpson of Norwalk, Iowa. Interment was in the Earlham cemetery.
