Funeral services will be held in Earlham at the Masonic Temple Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. He was a charter member of the Masons here, having been a member for 49 years. He was 88 years old.

Newell Packard was born in Rockland, Maine, in 1851 and came to Earlham about 1870. He worked here for some time on the Early farm, then went to Texas where he stayed until 1875. Upon his return here he was employed in the Chas. Winterset store which stood where the Earlham Savings Bank now stands. With the exception of a few years he was in active business here until his retirement in 1936. Mr. Packard started his work in grocery stores at a time when flour, sugar, and other commodities came in barrels and paper sacks, cellophane wrappings and tin cans were not in use. Sugar, instead of being sacked was wrapped up in brown wrapping paper. He was associated for many years with E. S. Fry in the Fry and Packard general store. This partnership lasted until Mr. Fry’s death in 1926. At the time of his retirement in 1936 Mr. Packard was believed to have been one of the oldest if not the oldest active business men in the state, having been in business sixty-six years.

Mr. Packard is survived by his wife and three children, Mrs. Dale Mullins of Winterset, Mrs. Elmer Beck of Des Moines, and James Albert Packard of Los Angeles, California. There are two grandchildren. An obituary will appear in next weeks paper.

N. A. Packard Obituary

Eighty-eight years ago there was born in Rockville, Maine, a son in the home of Albert M. and Nancy Jane Packard who resided at that place.

That was in 1851, and as the records go, that year differed little from previous or following New England winters.

Little Newell, as he was called grew to manhood amid the Maine surroundings, and in the late teens set forth to seek his fortune in the west. Having left all family ties behind and facing frontier hardships, Newell came to the stripling village of Earlham August 20, then nothing but a prairie settlement, and took up residence which has lengthened into more than a half century.

For two years he was employed on the Thomas Early farm near Early Chapel. His second position was in the Cap Winters store on the corner where the Citizens Bank was built. Mr. Winters had just previously purchased the store from Asa Barnett.

Mr. Packard’s interests have never been ambitious. His life has been of and for Earlham and his family. He was the oldest person in point of years residing in Earlham at the time of his retirement.

Mr. Packard’s life was one of routine and devotion to his 64 years of business. He found happiness in the little things, which after all count for so much in life.

N. A. Packard was born in Rockville, Maine, January 11, 1851 and departed this life October 26th, 1939 at the age of 88 years, nine months and 14 days. He was united in marriage to Anna E. Andrew, March 22, 1882. To this union were born four children, May, James Albert, Martha and Mildred. His oldest daughter, May preceded him in death in 1931.

He is survived by his wife, one son, James Albert and two daughters Mrs. Dale Mullins of Winterset, and Mrs. Elmer Beck of Des Moines, other relatives and a host of friends.

Mr. Packard united with the Unitarian Church of Rockville, Maine when a small child. He was a charter member of the Masonic Lodge of Earlham, having been a member for over 50 years. He was also a member of the Eastern Star Lodge. In 1932 Mr. Packard and his wife celebrated their Golden Wedding.

After his retirement Mr. Packard made his home with his daughter Mrs. Dale Mullins near Winterset.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. S. R. Overholser in the Masonic Temple on Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The Masons conducted the services at the grave. He was laid to rest in the Earlham cemetery.
