Services for Lydia Wilkie, 87, of Madrid, who died Monday afternoon, May 17, at Boone County hospital, were held at 1:30 Thursday afternoon at the Sunberg Funeral Home in Madrid, with burial at the Earlham cemetery at 3:30.
Mrs. Wilkie was born at Clermont, Iowa, on February 8, 1884. She was one of the ten children born to John and Maria Hunziker Riser, one of whom survives her, Evangeline Gilbert of Earlham.
Mrs. Wilkie was a former school teacher and had attended Upper Iowa University. She was a former member of the Eastern Star and the Presbyterian church at Earlham. Since moving to Madrid she was active in the Madrid Woman’s Club and attended St. John’s Lutheran church until failing of health prevented her participation.
She was married to Louie John Wilkie on April 18, 1906. He departed his life on February 5, 1919 at the age of 37. To this union five children were born: Lee Vern Wilkie of Earlham; Mrs. Roy Anderson (Marion) of Madrid; Mrs. Robert Thompson (Berniece) of Detroit; Mrs. John Comp (Esther) of Des Moines and Mrs. Jack Coultis (Helen) of Detroit. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
