Death of Mrs. J. F. Reed

Mrs. J. F. Reed, who has been residing with her daughter, Mrs. J. Robert Cornell, for the past five months, died last Sunday afternoon, January 31st, at the age of 66 years. Mrs. Reed suffered a paralytic stroke eighteen years ago, and she was critically ill, at her home in St. Paul in May. Mrs. Cornell was with her during the summer months and she became much better. She was brought here in September; an attack of influenza ten days ago made her weaker and heart trouble developed but her condition was not considered critical until Sunday afternoon. She passed away about 4:30 o'clock.

Mrs. Reed was born in Illinois Grove, Story county Iowa, August 13, 1865. (daughter of Samuel and Sarah Oakes). She attended the public schools and New Providence Academy.

Her marriage to J. F. Reed took place January 3, 1889, and they were the parents of three children one of whom died in infancy.

The Reeds lived for many years at Zearing and at Nevada.

She leaves her husband and two children, Mrs. Cornell of Winterset and E. O. Reed of Portland, Oregon. She also leaves a brother, H. C. Oakes of Zearing and four grandchildren.

The body was taken to Nevada and the Rev. W. O. Benthin, pastor of the Nevada Presbyterian church conducted her funeral services held Wednesday afternoon, February 3, at 1:30 o'clock in the Morfoot funeral home and burial was made in the family lot in the Nevada cemetery.

Mortuary - Emily Jane Oakes

Emily Jane Oakes, youngest child of Samuel and Sarah Oakes, was born at Illinois Grove, Story county, Iowa, August 13, 1865. She was educated in the public schools and New Providence Academy.

She married J. F. Reed on January 3, 1889 and was the mother of three children, one passing away in infancy. She lived with her husband at Zearing and Nevada, later moving to Lac qui Parle county, Minnesota, which place was her home thereafter.

In 1913 she suffered a paralytic stroke from which she never fully recovered. The last years of her life were spent as an invalid which she bore with patience and fortitude.

She departed this life at the home of her daughter in Winterset, Iowa January 31, 1932 at the age of 46 years, 5 months and 13 days.

She is survived by her husband, J. F. Reed, two children, Mrs. J. Robert Cornell of Winterset and E. O. Reed of Portland, Oregon, one brother, H. C. Oakes of Zearing, Iowa, four grandchildren and many friends and relatives.

Local News -

J. F. Reed of St. Paul was summoned here by the critical illness of his wife, Mrs. J. F. Reed Sunday. His son-in-law, R. J. Cornell met him in Des Moines.
