Seth Brittain Was Born in Madison County in 1860

Seth Brittain, a Madison county pioneer, died last Saturday, May 23, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Milo Hendricks, near Winterset. He was 88 years of age.

Mr. Brittain was probably one of the oldest native born citizens of Madison county, having been born in what is known as the Brittain neighborhood on Aug. 3, 1860. He was the son of Alfred and Julia Brittain, who were among the first settlers in that neighborhood.

He was married Feb. 7, 1884 to Lucy Farris. They were the parents of six children. The wife and mother died in 1939, and one daughter, Mabel DeWitt, also preceded him in death.

Mr. Brittain's entire life was spent as a farmer and blacksmith in Madison county.

He is survived by two sons, Loyd Brittain of Lorimor and Charlie Brittain of Winterset; three daughters, Mrs. Lois Clark, Mrs. Josie Hendricks and Mrs. Mary Allen, all of Winterset; a grandson whom he reared in his home, Albert DeWitt of Peru; two brothers, David Brittain of Des Moines and Robert Brittain of Winterset; a sister, Mrs. Martha Guiberson of Van Meter; 19 grandchildren; and 34 great grandchildren.

The Rev. I. E. Linkletter conducted his funeral services at the Winterset Church of Christ Monday, April 25th at two o'clock.

(Burial was in the North McDonald cemetery)
