GEORGE EDWIN STANDING

George Edwin Standing passed away at his home in Earlham, on Saturday evening, March 16, 1957, having reached the advanced age of more than 95 years. He had been confined to his home for several years and was bedfast since last June.

He was born at Leigh, Lancashire, England on December 27, 1861, one of seven children. When he was eight years old his parents came with their family to the United States and settled on a farm in the Friends community near Earlham.

On January 29, 1891 he married Sarah Nicholson of Rochester, New York. They made their home on a farm north of Earlham. In 1908 they moved to Oskaloosa, Iowa to give their children the opportunity of attending the Friends Academy there. After four years they returned to their farm. In 1924 they moved into Earlham and started a florist business.

George Standing was an earnest and devoted worker in the Bear Creek Friends church and in the Earlham church. He served as an elder for many years and held other positions of useful service from time to time. He enjoyed young people, worked and played with them and taught their Sunday School classes for many years. He took active interest in the welfare of the Earlham community and served on the town council. He was a kind and understanding husband and father, and a friendly co-operative neighbor. He loved the beauty of flowers and gardens. He especially enjoyed poetry and frequently quoted it. His last years of failing strength were marked by a remarkable spirit of patience and quiet trust in his Saviour.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Sarah, a son, Wilfred, one sister and three brothers.

He is survived by a son, Alfred E. and his wife, Anita, a daughter, Ethel, a granddaughter, Jean Biere and her husband Fred, two great grandsons, and two brothers, Alfred of Earlham and Josiah of Beaumont, California.
