CHESTER A. SMITH DEATH WAS JAN. 29

Chester A. Smith, a life-long resident of near Earlham, died Jan. 29 at Methodist hospital in Des Moines at the age of 75 years. He had been a farmer for all his active life.

Mr. Smith was born in Penn township, Jan. 27, 1882, a son of Milton and Elizabeth Tanner Smith. He attended school in Penn township and united with the Penn Center Methodist church in youth.

On Dec. 8, 1909, he was married to Maggie S. Pearson. They were parents of seven children, one daughter dying in infancy.

Soon after marriage he transferred his church membership to Early Chapel Church of Christ, in which he was a board member and church treasurer for many years.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, Carl Smith of Adel and Lloyd Smith of Earlham; four daughters, Mrs. Gail Noland of Des Moines, Mrs. Leonard Routh of Ames, Mrs. Carroll Noland of Des Moines and Mrs. Wayne Noland of Carlisle; 20 grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Pearl Price of Earlham and three brothers, Will and Ray Smith of Earlham and Asa Smith of Dexter.

Funeral services were held Jan. 31 from the Early Chapel church, conducted by the Rev. Mr. Shepherd. Burial was made in the Penn Center cemetery.

Chester Smith Funeral Thursday

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. for Chester A. Smith, 75, at the Early Chapel church. Rev. Clayton P. Shepard, pastor of the Chariton Church of Christ will be in charge of the services. Burial will be in the Penn Center cemetery.

Mr. Smith, who has farmed for many years in the Early Chapel neighborhood had been in poor health for some time.

Chester A. Smith was born in Penn township, in Madison county, on January 27, 1882 to Elizabeth Tanner and Milton E. Smith.

He attended school in Penn township and united with the Penn Center Methodist church in his youth. He was engaged in farming all of his active life.

On December 8, 1909 he was united in marriage with Maggie Susannah Pearson. To this union were born seven children. One infant daughter, Lillie, preceded him in death, on September 9, 1910.

He is survived by his widow, two sons, Carl of Adel; Lloyd of Earlham; and four daughters, Mrs. Gail Noland of Des Moines; Mrs. Leonard Routh, of Ames; Mrs. Carroll Noland of Des Moines; Mrs. Wayne Oland of Carlisle and twenty grandchildren. One sister, Mrs. Pearl Price of Earlham; three brothers, Will and Ray of Earlham, and Asa of Dexter.

Soon after his marriage he transferred from the Penn Center church to the Early Chapel Church of Christ, in which he was a Board Member and Church Treasurer for many years. His life was devoted to his family, his church and his community. His loved ones, fellow Christians, neighbors and many friends will miss him greatly.

Our loss for the moment is Heaven’s gain for Eternity.
