Chettie Irene Mapes, daughter of W. M. and Caroline Mapes, was born in Nebraska, November 1, 1874, and passed away September 23, 1972 at the age 97 years, 10 months and 23 days. She was of a family of four children, all of whom preceded her in death. At age six weeks her family moved to Iowa where she has lived since except 1-1/2 years her family lived in Kansas.
She spent most of her childhood around Stuart, Redfield, and Earlham communities. She finished her education at Normal in Dexter and taught at country schools in the Earlham vicinity for two terms.
On December 31, 1901 she was united in marriage to Ira T. Stanley, they started housekeeping on their farm north of Earlham where their son Robert and wife now reside. They continued to live there until 1929, when they moved to another farm, where their granddaughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Jerry College, now reside. They lived there for 34 years.
Chettie and Ira celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary at the Friends church in Earlham in 1951 and also observed their 60th anniversary in their home, with many relatives and friends in 1961. They enjoyed 62 years of marriage before Ira preceded her in death in 1963.
Chettie was converted at the age of 14 and still is a member of the Christian Church. She was a member of the Eastern star. In January of 1973, she would have been a 50-year member.
Chettie was an energetic woman, an honest and upright citizen. She loved flowers of all kinds, and took great pride always in her own flowers and vegetable garden. She was a faithful helper to her husband, and had a great love for animals.
Since the passing of her husband she has made her home with her son and family until she went to Maple Lin Manor in Earlham.
She leaves to mourn her passing, one son Robert and his wife Dorothy, a granddaughter Helen College, her husband Jerry, four great grandchildren, Joey, David, Marcia and Michelle; also a number of nieces and nephews and many friends.
Last rites were held at the Friends church in Earlham at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 26. Pastor John H. Baxter officiated. Mrs. Janice Olson and Mrs. Kay Gunderson sang a duet, accompanied at the organ by Bernieta Patience. Casket bearers were Richard Wheeldon, Charles Wheeldon, Lyle Ellis, Charles Hutchison, Michael Foust and Russel Foust. Interment was in the Earlham cemetery. Funeral arrangements were made by Fisher funeral home of Van Meter.
