Mrs. Ellen Purvis of Truro died at the Harken hospital in Osceola Friday, April 29, at the advanced age of 95 years. She had been in failing health for the last 10 years.
Mrs. Purvis had been a resident of the Truro community since 1886. She was a native of Knox county, Ohio, where, as Phoebe Ellen Benedict, she was born Dec. 24, 1855, the daughter of Israel and Sarah Benedict. When she was 7 years old she came with her parents to Iowa. They settled near West Branch for several years, then moved to near West Liberty, where she grew to womanhood.
She was married to Chester S. Purvis of West Liberty on Feb. 19, 1878. In the spring of 1886 they came to Madison county, settling on a farm near Truro. They lived there until moving into Truro in 1909.
Throughout her long residence here she was active in church work, as a member of the Oak Run Friends church, and after moving to Truro, of the Truro Methodist church.
Mrs. Purvis' husband died in 1926. Surviving are her son Arthur Purvis of Truro; a daughter, Mrs. Arthur Carver of St. Charles; two grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Nora Rupp of Washington, Iowa.

Phoebe Ellen Benedict daughter of Israel and Sarah Benedict, was born in Knox county, Ohio, December 24, 1853 and passed to her reward at an Osceola hospital April 29, 1949, aged 95 years, 4 months and 5 days.
She came with her parents to Iowa when she was seven years old living near West Branch, Iowa for a few years, then moving to the South Prairie community, near West Liberty, Iowa, where she grew to womanhood.
She was united in marriage to Chester S. Purvis of West Liberty Feb. 19, 1878 and to this union two children were born, Arthur L. Purvis and Blanche now Mrs. Arthur Carver of St. Charles, Iowa.
In the spring of 1886 she with her husband and children came to Madison county and settled on a farm near Truro, and lived in that community until 1909 when they moved to Truro.
She accepted Christ as her Savior and united with the South Prairie Methodist Protestant church. Soon after her marriage.
After moving to Madison county she transferred her membership to the Oak Run Friends church near her home where she and her family were regular attendants, the Friends church being the church of her parents in the family home in Ohio.
When she moved to Truro she united with the Methodist church of which she remained a faithful member until her death.
He husband passed away in Truro March 25, 1926 and after his death she has made her home with her daughter Blanche where she has been tenderly and lovingly cared for.
She loved the work of the church and was always ready and willing to do her part, serving as president of the ladies’ aid and other duties.
She was a regular attendant of Sunday school and the church service as long as her health permitted.
She has been in failing health for the past ten years but was able to visit with her family and She died triumphant in the faith which she had lived, and her memory will be an inspiration to steadfastness, loyalty and forbearance to all who knew her.
