F. W. MARTENS DIED ON TUESDAY

Retired Farmer Had Been a Resident of County Since 1915

F. W. Martens, a substantial farmer and respected citizen of Madison county since 1915, died at his home in Winterset Tuesday evening, July 20. He was 76 years of age.

Mr. Martens was a native of Warren county, where he was born near Churchville on Oct. 2, 1871, the son of Frederick B. and Margaret Huss Martens. His early years were spent in that community, and he was married there to Anna Russ.

In 1915 he moved to Madison township of this county, where he became an extensive landholder and influential citizen. In 1944 he retired and moved to Winterset, where his death occurred.

He is survived by his wife; seven sons, Louis W. Martens, Fred B. Martens, William E. Martens, Clarence H. Martens, Grant J. Martens and Irvin W. Martens, all of the Fairview neighborhood, and Arthur Martens of Clarinda; and one daughter, Esther Martens, at home.

He also leaves nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held this Friday. There will be short services at 1:30 p.m. at the residence in Winterset, followed by services at 2:30 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran church in Jefferson township. The rites will be conducted by the pastor of the church the Rev. C. G. Meyer. Burial will be made in the church cemetery there.
