Harold "Slim" Mapes of 816 E. Filmore St. died Tuesday, December 4 at Madison County Memorial Hospital at the age of 73. Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, December 7, at Collins Funeral Home. Burial was at Winterset Cemetery with Rev. Charles Updike officiating.
Born on July 5, 1906 in Adair County, he was the son of Harve and Alice Freiberg Mapes. He was united in marriage to Vergie B. Huss on December 29, 1933 in Winterset. A lifelong resident here, Mr. Mapes was an employee of Penn-Dixie and a member of Foursquare Gospel Church.
He is survived by his wife Vergie; four children, Gail Mapes of Mount Ayr, Glenn Mapes, Norma Key and Shennie McDonald, all of Winterset; 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren; a brother, Leslie Mapes of Earlham; and two sisters, Vera Gamble of Carlisle and Cora Bristow of Winterset.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a son, Verl; a brother, George; and a sister, Dorothy Richardson.
