WINTERSET'S OLDEST CITIZEN DIES

Hiram Leach Passes Away at the Age of Nearly Ninety Five

Hiram Leach died on last Saturday evening at the home of his son, C. H. Leach, following a two day's illness. He was up town as usual the day he was taken ill and up to this time, continued to do his own housework, and was remarkably active for one of his extreme old age. Had he lived until March 6th, he would have been ninety five years old. He was born in Scolon county, New Jersey in 1818. In 1864 he married Nancy M. Spence, who passed away eight years ago.

They raised a family of eleven children, five daughters and six sons, two daughters preceded him in death. The remaining children are Albert of North Bend, Wash., Worn of Rome, Ga., J. E. of Nevada, Mo.; Mrs. W. H. Kessler of Parsons, Kans.; Mrs. Ida M. Smith of Los Angeles; Mrs. Louis Ricks of McGill, Nevada; and C. H. and W. F. Leach of this county. Mrs. James Egy, the youngest daughter, died in Winterset about two years ago.

The deceased came to Winterset over fifty years ago and after a short residence here moved to Story county, where he resided until the early eighties, when he moved to a farm west of Winterset. In early days he followed the life of a frontier stage driver and saw much of the wild life of what was then the frontier of civilization in this county.

Since the death of his companion eight years ago, he lived by himself but was devoted to his children and grandchildren and his sunny disposition gave him many warm friends who will miss his familiar face and always cheery greeting.

Funeral services were held Tuesday forenoon, conducted by Rev. A. C. Grafton of the Christian church. Burial was made at the McDonald burying ground in Douglas township.
