Pfc. Edward Butcher of Macksburg died in the Philippine Islands on May 2 as the result of wounds suffered in action against the Japanese, according to a telegram received last Thursday by his parents, M. and Mrs. W.E. Butcher of Macksburg.
Private Butcher was a veteran of long service and several campaigns in this war. He took his training at Camp Roberts, Calif., and was assigned to the 32nd Inf. Div., and was stationed in Australia for some time. He saw action in the New Guinea campaign. In recent months his division has been fighting on Luzon island in the Philippines, where his death occurred.

The body of the late Pfc. Edward E. Butcher, son of Mr. and Mrs. William E. Butcher of Macksburg, was due to arrive in San Francisco this Monday from Manilla, Philippine Islands. It will be forwarded to Winterset at a later date.
Pfc. Butcher was killed in action during the recent war while fighting with the U.S. army in the Philippine islands, during the campaign that resulted in the reconquest of those islands from the Japanese invaders.

Page 1Macksburg to Hold Gold Start Service
A Gold Start memorial service will be held at the Methodist church here Sunday at 10 a.m. in honor of the service men from this community who gave their lives for their country in the recent conflict.
Those to be honored are Billy J. Stewart, Ben Kiddoo, Lloyd Hudson, Eddie Briggles, Dale Bell, and Edward Butcher.
The Rev. J.A. Englund will have charge of the service, assisted by the American Legion.
