A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE LIFE OF CHARLES ERICH MAXWELL

Charles Erich Maxwell, only son of Josiah and Lousia Knudson Maxwell, was born near Earlham, Iowa, on June 1, 1889, and died on March 25, 1957, in a Des Moines hospital. He was a birthright member of the Earlham Friends Meeting, and except for the years spent at Oskaloosa, Iowa, his membership remained here throughout his life span of almost 68 years.

He received his early education in the Earlham community. Following his father’s death in 1898 the family moved to Oskaloosa, where his education was continued in Penn Academy and Penn College. He completed his work there in 1911, and later studied at Iowa State College. In the spring of 1912 he moved back to the home farm, where he has spent all of his adult life, and has become a very real member of the Earlham communities.

He was united in marriage to Mildred Haworth of Star, Idaho on May 30, 1919 and they have shared almost 38 years of wonderful companionship. Three children came to bless the home-Helen, Lousie and Bob.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred, his only sister, Elizabeth Maxwell of Earlham, his children-Helen and Roscoe Millett of West Branch, Iowa; Louise and Jay Beede of Richmond, Indiana, and Betty and Bob Maxwell of Earlham, and seven grandchildren, who are Elaine, Gwen and Marilyn Millett, Mary Louise and John Beede and Steven and Danny Maxwell.

The funeral service was held in the Friends church at Earlham on March 28, with the pastor, L. Willard Reynolds, officiating. Arthur Hadley, a former pastor here, spoke briefly, as did also Dr. Wendell Farr of Oskaloosa, and George Lewis of Marshalltown
