Local Woman Died Feb. 22 at Home of Sister in Central City
Mrs. M. R. Hassel, Sr., whose death occurred Feb. 22 at Central City, had been a resident of Winterset since 1923.
Mrs. Hassel was a native of Shellburg, where she was born Oct. 27, 1873. She was the former Clara Odessa Toms, eldest daughter of Milton and Mary Olive Toms. She served many years as a public school teacher.
She was married to Maurice R. Hassel of this community on June 2, 1923, and they established their home in Winterset. She had been at the home of her sister, Mrs. Olive Drexler of Central City three weeks prior to death, which occurred at the age of 74 years.
She was a member of the Winterset Presbyterian church.
Surviving are her husband; three step-children, Maurice R. Hassel, Jr., of Des Moines, James Hassel of Davenport, and Mrs. Blanche Breeding of Winterset; four sisters, Mrs. Drexler of Central City, Mrs. Anna Crosby of Tipton, Mrs. Bernie Brown and Mrs. Effie Guillan of Cedar Rapids; and two brothers, Harry and Clayton Toms both of Cedar Rapids.
Funeral services were held Feb. 24 at Central City in charge of the Rev. Mr. Samek, and burial was made in the cemetery there.
