Long Time Winterset Resident Was 70 Years Old at His Death
John H. Read, a resident of Winterset most of his long life, died Monday, Nov. 6 at a nursing home in Cedar Rapids. He was 70 years of age.
Mr. Read was a native of Rooks county, Kansas, where he was born Sept. 21, 1880, a son of Alfred and Sabina Gardner Read. When he was 3 years of age, he came to Winterset with his parents. He spent his life here until, because of failing health, he moved to Cedar Rapids four years ago to be near his children. He was employed at the hall here for many years.
He was married Jan. 30, 1906 to Jesse Stroud, who preceded him in death.
He is survived by his son, James Read of Monticello; two daughters, Mrs. Harold Thompson of Anamosa and Mrs. George Richardson of Monticello; six grandchildren; and two sisters, Mrs. Jennie Simpson of Winterset and Mrs. Susan Longshore of Lorimor.
Funeral services were held last Wednesday from the Goettsch Funeral home at Monticello, and burial was made in Oakwood cemetery there.
