Veteran of Recent War Hit by Car on Highway 30 Near Ames
Carroll B. Brooker, a resident of Winterset most of his life, died last Saturday, April 10, at a hospital in Ames. His death was caused by injuries received when he was struck by a car less than an hour earlier, while walking across the paving of highway No. 30, three-quarters of a mile east of Ames.
Mr. Brooker, who was 27 years of age, had been living at Alden in recent months.
He was the son of Judson and Agnes Brooker of Winterset, and was born here May 28, 1920. He was married Dec. 16, 1936, to Evelyn Finch. They were the parents of three children.
He enlisted in the U.S. army Oct. 21, 1942, and served three years during the recent war, 18 months of which was spent overseas.
With the exception of brief residences at Vail, Davenport and Alden, his life was spent in Winterset.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by the three children, Shirley, aged 10, Richard, aged 9, and Billy aged 6, of Alden; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Judson Brooker of Winterset; a brother, Robert Brooker of California; two sisters, Joan Brooker at home and Mrs. Keller Cline of Mitchellville; and his two grandmothers, Mrs. Nora Clark, and Mrs. Blanche Brooker, both of Winterset.
Funeral services were held here Tuesday from the Anderson home for funerals, in charge of the Rev. Tom Foglesong, pastor of the Captial Hill Christian church of Des Moines. Green-Rogers post of the American Legion participated with appropriate ritual. Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
