Barbara Smith, wife of John W. Smith, was born in Bohemia February 20th, 1860 and passed away at the home of her son Albert in Des Moines August 10th, 1924, at the age of 64 years, 5 months, and 20 days.
With her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Victora, she came to America at the age of four and located with the family in the vicinity of Earlham.
In 1893 she was united in marriage to John W. Smith. To this union were born two sons, Albert and Frank, both of Des Moines. These with the husband and two children of a former marriage, Mrs. Nellie Lancor, of Bensonville, Ill., and Jim Zeep, of Chicago, Ill., and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Shatava, of Bridgewater, Iowa, and Miss Anna Victora, of Los Angeles, Calif., still survive. Two daughters of the first union died in young girlhood.
Mrs. Smith with her husband left Earlham October 27th, 1923, to spend the winter with her daughter in Bensonville. In January she submitted to an operation which was futile. Knowing she could not recover, Mrs. Smith expressed a wish to return to her home to spend the remaining days of her life. She was removed as far as Des Moines, where she was taken to the home of her son in the hope of enlisting successful medical aid. In this she was partially successful, having greatly improved in health, until she was suddenly stricken and quickly succumbed.
Mrs. Smith joined the Presbyterian Church in Earlham in 1901, and although not actively engaged in the work of the church because of ill health, she held steadfast to her …….best remembered by those who knew her well for her quick sympathy and kindly deeds.
