Charles H. DeVault was born Sept. 10, 1850 near Solon, Johnson county, Iowa, to Charles and Rachel DeVault, and died June 11, 1924. He was next to the youngest of a family of six sons.
His death came as a culmination of a lingering illness which became serious during the last two years of his life. His age was 73 years, 9 months and one day.
In 1879 he moved with his parents to Linn county where he resided thirteen years, after which in 1892 he, with his own family, moved to his present home.
On April 5, 1881 he was married to Minerva Jane Fuhrmeister who remained his faithful and constant companion to the last. To this union were born five children, O. J., Albert, Martha, Clarence and Olive, all of whom are living and reside in this community and were with him at his death, except Martha who died Feb. 27, 1913.
He became a Christian early in life, and maintained an active interest in spiritual things. He first became a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, and transferred his membership to the Methodist Episcopal Church upon his arrival in this community.
Chas. H. DeVault obtained an unusual education for one of his period, but only at the expense of unusual personal sacrifices. Attending the country schools of Johnson county, he followed it with a preparatory course at Western College, Mount Vernon, and then attended college at Cornell College for two years, followed by two years at the State University of Iowa. In the pursuit of this education it was nothing extraordinary for him to walk the distance of eighteen miles between the family homestead and Iowa City.
Following this school career, he taught the winter term at a country school near his home for nine years, engaging in farming during the summer months. He was a constant reader, and maintained an intelligent grasp of everyday problems as they came and went. Always having been very industrious, he prospered and held the esteem of his friends and neighbors.
He left his devoted family circle with one of the sources of great joy in his possessions, that of seeing his children following his example. He came to the full allotment of life, and now passes to the great crowning victory of his faith. In the midst of sorrow there is the assurance that the victory is his through that Christian faith, of which he was always ready to speak. The crown of righteousness which is by faith, is now his great joy, as he waits for those whom he has left behind.
He leaves to mourn his death his wife, five children, nine grandchildren, one brother and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held at the Penn Center church, Thursday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Stevens, assisted by Rev. Walter Wovrauch, a former pastor. Interment was at Penn Center.
