Merrit Ogburn Takes Life By Hanging

St. Chareles - Februray 29 - Special -

The community was shocked when word was telephoned into town Friday about noon, that Merritt Ogburn had taken his own life by shooting himself in the head with a shotgun, at his home about 2 1/2 miles southwest of town.

Mr. Ogburn had gone up stairs and his wife hearing the shot rushed to the stair door in time to see him fall to the floor. He was 75 years of age and while he had not been sick, he had been very nervous for some time and this is the only reason known for his act.

In his young manhood he was united in marriage to Miss Mary Odell of Scott township. They were the parents of thirteen children, eleven of whom are still living.

The mother died in 1922 and a few years ago he was married to Mrs. Ida Dings of Des Moines, who survives him.

A daughter, Mrs. Maude Beall of Alfalfa, Oklahoma arrived Sunday and four sons of Des Moines also came for the funeral which was held from the United Presbyterian church Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Other sons were in the navy and were unable to be present. Two brothers, Harlan and William of Corning also came to attend the funeral.

Burial was in the St. Charles cemetery.
