Death of George C. Smith

Macksburg Special, May 4 - Funeral services for George C. Smith, a former Macksburg resident, were held at the Macksburg Methodist church, Wednesday, afternoon, May 4th at 2 o'clock and burial was made in the Macksburg cemetery.

Mr. Smith had been making his home on a farm near Panora in more recent years, but previously lived near Macksburg. He had been ill for a long time and died at the Clarinda hospital. He leaves his wife and three children, Herbert, Esther and Marion.

George Z. Smith

George Z. Smith, son of W. H. and Mary J. Smith, was born at Cleveland, Ohio, February 7, 1868, and died May, 1932, after an illness of many months duration, at the age of 64 years, 2 months and 65 (sic) days.

He leaves his wife, three children and two sisters.

On April 4, 1893, he was married to Ida S. Abbott. To their (sic) five children were born, Dr. H. L. Smith of Panora; George M. Smith of Sydney and Esther Smith of Panora. One son and one daughter died in infancy.

In 1892 Mr. Smith United with the Methodist Episcopal church. For many years he was a member of the I. O. O. F. lodge of Macksburg, Iowa. He took an active part in many community affairs, was superintendent of the Sunday school many years, member of a quartet, and of a band; chairman of many Red Cross, Liberty-Loan and other committees during the World war.

Short services were held at 11:30 at the Jennings home in Panora by Rev. Charles B. Reynolds and assisted by Rev. W. H. Doyle. The body was taken to his former home at Macksburg, and services were held at the Methodist church there, by Rev. Keast. Burial was made in the Moon cemetery.
