Death of John Jopling
John Jopling passed away at his home about seven o'clock, Monday morning, February 29th. He had been ill with heart trouble for a week.
His daughter, Mrs. John L. Wright of the Pucker Brush neighborhood has been with him all week and Friday a granddaughter, Mrs. Alice Smith, who is a graduate nurse, came by airplane from Cheyenne, Wyoming, to care for her grandfather. Mr. Jopling's son, David Jopling and wife from Des Moines were here Sunday and his other daughter, Mrs. Jack Golderoy and Mr. Golderoy and son, David, came from Roundup, Montana.

Funeral services for John W. Jopling were held at the Methodist Episcopal church at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, March 3. The Rev. S. C. Peterson, conducted a short service at the home and the regular service at the church. Interment was in the Van Meter cemetery.
Eight grandsons acted as pallbearers. They were, David, John Jr. and Gilbert Wright of Adel, Cleo Dennis, Irvin Clark, Don and Ival Jopling, all of Des Moines and David Gilderoy of Roundup, Montana.
Relatives who attended the service from out of town were, Mr. and Mrs. John L. Wright, Mr. and Mrs. David Wright and Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Wright, John Wright, Jr., Mrs. Ethel Inman and family and Ray Renolds, all of Adel, Mr. and Mrs. John Gilderoy and son David of Roundup, Montana, and their daughter, Mrs. J. Berlin Smith of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Mr. and Mrs. David Jopling and their sons Ival and Don, Mr. and Mrs. Cleo Dennis, Miss Doris Wright, Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Clark, Mrs. Ella Smith, Mr. and Mrs. Will Jopling and sons, Hershel and Bill, Mr. and Mrs. John Updike and Mrs. Clara Leopold, all of Des Moines, Mrs. John Pullin of New Market, Mrs. Maggie -------------------.
Mr. Joplin was born in Durham county, England May 27, 1850. He passed from this life at his home in Van Meter at 6:30 a.m. Monday, March 20, 1932 at the age of eighty-one years. He came to this country with his parents when he was only 18 months old. His family first settled in St. Louis, Missouri where they lived for six and one half years. After the death of his mother the family moved to Illinois.
On February 8, 1872, Mr. Jopling was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Anderson of Bellville, Illinois. To this union were born four children: Alice, David, Eleanor and Jimmie. Jimmie died in infancy while the family was residing in Angus, Iowa.
In the year 1878 Mr. Jopling ---- with his family moved to Van Meter. After many years residence here they later resided in various towns in Iowa and Illinois, returning to Van Meter in 1925 where they have since made their home.
Mr. and Mrs. Jopling had the rare privilege of celebrating their sixtieth wedding anniversary. On February 7, at their home here, a large number of relatives and friends were entertained in celebration of the event.
Mr. Jopling is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. John L. Wright of Adel and Mrs. John Gilderoy of Roundup, Montana, one son, David Wright of Des Moines, fifteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Jopling spent sixty years of his life working as a coal miner. He was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge for nearly forty years and they had a delegation at the funeral.
