Martha A. Smith, daughter of Jacob and Mary Smith was born September 17, 1848 in Akron, Ohio and died January 30, 1933 at the age of eight-four years.

At the age of four she came with her parents to Iowa locating in Hartford, where she grew to womanhood. On November 1, 1866 she was married to Nathan C. McDole who was a veteran of the Civil War.

The young married couple settled in Mortar, Iowa, where they lived for several years, then moving to Winterset where she lived until death.

Mr. and Mrs. McDole were the parents of ten children, Mrs. John Marley, Mrs. Joe McKibben and Mrs. Rex Olmstead of Winterset, Mrs. J. E. Duff of Des Moines, James McDole of Cleveland, Ohio and William, Phoebe and Josephine at home. Her husband and two children, Thomas and Dora preceded her in death.

Other relatives surviving are a sister, Mrs. Halderman, a brother Homer Smith, both of Hartford, Iowa; a sister Mrs. Panborn of Flecity, Ohio; also several grandchildren and one great grandchild Mary Jane Marley.

She was united with the Methodist church in Mortar, Iowa, in 1869 of which she was a member at the time of her death.

Although she was practically an invalid for several years, she was always cheerful and bore her afflictions with patience. She was a kind and loving mother and will be greatly missed in the home. To know her was to love her and her passing will bring deep sorrow to a host of friends and neighbors.

(Burial was made in the Winterset cemetery)
