MRS. ANNA HAWK DIES

Mrs. Anna Hawk, a well known resident of Winterset, died at her home of West Jefferson street, last Friday, September 15th at the age of 78 years. Mrs. Hawk had been in failing health for several years, but her condition was not regarded as critical until a week previous to her death.

The deceased was a daughter of Charles and Melvira Tapper and was born in Chicago, November 7, 1855. The family had come from Sweden, where the other two children, Ellen A. and John G. Tapper were born. They reached Chicago in 1855 and from there they moved to La Salle county, Illinois, and then on to Webster county, Iowa in 1869. Aunt Annie as she was affectionately called was educated in the Webster county schools and at the age of 14 became a teacher in a country school.

In Webster county she was married on January 22, 1875 to Henry H. Hawk of Winterset. They started housekeeping in Madison county on a farm ten miles southwest of Winterset and later on a farm three miles farther north on what was then know as the Council Bluffs road. This is now known as Highway 92. In 1901 they left the farm and moved to Winterset and a year later built the house on West Jefferson street that has since been their home. Four years ago Mr. Hawk died.

Mrs. Hawk's sister Ellen Hawk died some years ago and her home has long been counted as home for the sister's children. The deceased was a member of the Presbyterian church and for many years a teacher in the Sunday School and a regular attendant at all the services. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star and of the Current Topic Club. The work of this organization was of especial interest to her and at her death there was a paper in her desk that she had prepared for her club and was to have presented at the next meeting of the group.

She is survived by a brother, Dr. J. G. Tapper of Elgin, Illinois and her son, Charles and the four children of her late sister Ellen; Rev. I. T. Hawk of Grovetown, Georgia, Mrs. Clara Hawk Myers of Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. C. L. Hawk of Los Angeles, California and Miss Mabel Winifred Hawk of Racine, Wisconsin.

The Rev. R. C. Cully, pastor of her church conducted her funeral services at the First Presbyterian church Sunday afternoon, September 17th at 3 o'clock and burial was made in the Winterset cemetery.
