Succumbs at Age of 58 Years After Extended Illness
Thornton Duff, a well known Winterset and Madison county resident most of his life, died at his home in Des Moines Sunday, Dec. 10, following a long battle against cancer. He was 58 years of age.
Mr. Duff was born in Madison county. Most of his active years were spent in Winterset. He worked as a clerk here for many years, and later served as manager of the United Food Market here. Following that he operated his own grocery store on the north side of the square.
He moved to Des Moines in 1942, and recently had been employed as a carpenter by the Overhead Door company of Iowa, Inc.
Near surviving relatives include his wife; their daughter, Phyllis Jean, at home; and a nephew whom he reared in his home, Harry Hamilton, now serving in the U.S. Army Air forces at Lowry Field, Denver, Colo.
Funeral services were held in Des Moines Tesday and on Wednesday rites were held from the First Methodist church in Winterset. Burial was made in the cemetery here.
