Samantha Virginia Sayre, daughter of Absolom and Rachel McDonald Sayre was born at New Virginia, April 17, 1857 and died at the hospital at Iowa City, August 8, 1933 age 76 years, 3 months and 24 days.
When but a small child her parents moved to Madison County, settling on a farm near Elm Grove church, later moving to a farm near Norwalk.
On February 7, 1875, she was united in marriage to Albert W. King of Madison County. To this union four children were born, the eldest, a daughter, dying in infancy. Those remaining are Clarion A. of Boone, Mrs. Mabel Arnold of St. Charles, and Milton Co. of Escondido, California, who was unable to be present at the funeral.
On February 7, 1925, she and her husband celebrated their golden wedding and at the time of her death had enjoyed more than 58 years of wedded life.
For many years her father had served as a local Methodist minister and being reared in a Christian home she was converted at an early age and united with the Methodist church at Elm Grove at the age of 16 years and ever after remaining steadfast and true to her church and always taking great pleasure in attending any of its services.
In the summer of 1914 her health failed, leaving her a semi-invalid and for the past six years she had failed rapidly and on July 26th fell in her home breaking her hip which resulted in her death ten days later.
Besides her husband and three children she leaves three grandchildren, one great grandchild, one sister, Mrs. Jane King of St. Charles, three brothers, J. K. Sayre of Ensign, Kansas, M. F. Sayre of Mullensville, Kansas and D. W. Sayre of Morgan, Minnesota and many other relatives and a host of friends.
Her funeral services were held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church in St. Charles conducted by her pastor, Rev. L. W. Nixon. Burial was in the King cemetery near the Elm Grove church.
