LEVI A. CHESTNUTWOOD

The sun rose clear and bright Tuesday morning, all earth seemed aglow. But alas, a dark shadow was hanging over us for death had come and taken from us a loved one.

Levi A. Chestnutwood, son of Mordecai and Hannah Chestnutwood, was born on a farm near De Soto, Iowa, January 23, 1856 and passed away November 21, 1933, aged 77 years, 9 months and 28 days.

Here, near De Soto, he grew to young manhood, attending the common school and later Simpson College at Indianola, Iowa, trying to gain such education as he could afford at that time.

On April 2, 1884, he was united in marriage to Allie E. Barnett who passed away January 5, 1930. Three children, two daughters and one son were born into this home. The youngest, baby daughter of 7 months died October 22, 1895. The hearts and door of this home were opened to an orphan boy of 12 years age and for 9 years Joe Zebedee received their love and care.

He leaves to mourn his loss one daughter, Mrs. Verle Mark of De Soto, Iowa and the son Harry who lived in the home with his father, six grandchildren and one great grand child, two brothers and three sisters and a host of friends and relatives.

LAST RITES HONOR L. A. CHESTNUTWOOD

Masonic and Odd Fellow Orders Have Parts in Services Conducted From Earlham Methodist Church Last Thursday. Interment Was in Earlham Cemetery.

Levi A. Chestnutwood, son of Mordecai and Hannah Chestnutwood was born on a farm near De Soto, Iowa, January 23, 1856 and passed away November 21, 1933, aged 77 years, 9 months and 28 days.

Here, near De Soto, he grew to young manhood, attending the common school and later Simpson College at Indianola, Iowa, trying to gain such education as he could afford at that time.

On April 2, 1884 he was united in marriage to Allie E. Barnett who passed away January 5, 1930. Three children, two daughters and one son were born into this home. The youngest, baby daughter of 7 months died October 22, 1895. The hearts and door of this home were opened to an orphan boy of 12 years of age and for 9 years Joe Zebedee received their love and care.

He leaves to mourn his loss one daughter, Mrs. Verle Mark of De Soto, Iowa and the son Harry who lived in the home with his father, six grandchildren and one great grandchild, two brothers and three sisters and a host of friends and relatives.

His physical condition has been yielding for years to disease until death was the conqueror.

He was a faithful husband, and affectionate father, a kind friend, an obliging neighbor and a good citizen.

Rev. Stahl was the pastor of the De Soto Methodist Church in 1895, and it was during a revival there that Mr. Chestnutwood arranged for a prayer meeting in his own home in which he was converted. He was a member of both Odd Fellow and Masonic Lodges.

Our memory will recall the love of the past and hope make real the blissful reunion of the future.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church at Earlham, Thursday afternoon, November 23 at 2 o’clock with an address by the pastor Rev. James Walls, assisted by Rev. S. C. Peterson, pastor of the De Soto Methodist Church.

The I.O.O.F. gave their service at the close of the church services and the Masons had charge of the services at the grave with a prayer by Rev. Peterson.

The music was given by a mixed quartet: Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Anderson and Mr. and Mrs. L. O. Benfield of De Soto, accompanied by Mrs. Ralph Shetterly at the piano.

Interment was in the Earlham cemetery.
