Susie Johnston Hastings

Susie, the youngest daughter of Wm. and Etta May Johnston, was born in Bevington, Iowa, March 17, 1909.

She attended the Bevington school and later went to Martensdale high school where she graduated in 1927. Beside the regular school activities in which she always took part she loved to sing and took part in many programs, not only in Bevington, but in many of the surrounding towns.

She was married to Leo Hastings December 28, 1927. To them one child was born, Leo Leslie, who lived only a little while. After their marriage they made their home in Creston until they moved to Davenport in 1929.

Susie has been a bunch of sunshine wherever she has lived. She had many girl friends and after her marriage made friends wherever she went. She was so bright and loving that she attracted love.

In her own family no one could have been more kind or helpful and since her marriage she has been an ideal wife and helpmate. As a girl her opportunities for attending church were limited, but as she grew up she took delight in the service of the church and attended whenever possible. She had sincere faith in Christ and hers was a gospel of cheerfulness and love.

She came back to Winterset upon the death of her mother a few days ago and was taken home on June 14, 1930, aged 21 years, two months and 28 days.

She leaves her husband, four sisters, Mrs. Laura Kinniard, Bevington, Iowa; Mrs. Ella Lytle, Winterset, Mrs. Mae Rogers, Winterset, Genevieve Cleland, Winterset, and three brothers, Ned Johnston, Jefferson, Denver Johnston and Everett Johnston, Bevington, as well as a number of other relatives and many friends.

Services were held for her at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon from the Baptist church, with Rev. John T. Hall officiating. Burial was in the family lot in the St. Charles cemetery by the side of her parents.
