Death of James Kiernan

James Kiernan, a well known resident of Madison county, died at 11 o’clock Friday morning, January 10th, while surrounded by the members of his family. Death was caused by a complication of diseases. He was 69 years of age.

Mr. Kiernan, the oldest son of Peter and Margaret Kiernan, was born in Galva, Illinois, September 2, 1861. During early manhood Mr. Kiernan was a railroad conductor in the south. In 1891, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ryan, and they took up their residence on the farm which has been their home since. They were the parents of nine children, three of whom preceded him in death.

Mr. Kiernan was a devout Catholic and an exemplary father in every respect. His wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Kiernan, four daughters, Sister Mary Juanita, of Superior, Wisconsin; Margaret, Lenora, and Frances, all of Des Moines, and two sons, John, of Booneville, and Thomas, a law student of Marquette University, mourn his death. Besides his immediate family he leaves two sisters, Mrs. N. J. Nolan, of Winterset, and Miss Frances Kiernan, of Detroit, Michigan, and three brothers, P. J. Kiernan and T. P. Kiernan, of Galesburg, Illinois, and J. F. Kiernan, of Detroit, Michigan.

The funeral services were held Monday morning at ten o’clock, from St. Patrick’s church in Lee township. The Rev. M. F. Dugan officiated and interment was made in St. Patrick’s cemetery.

Van Meter -

James Kiernan died at this home southeast of Van Meter, Friday. Mr. Kiernan was 68 years old and was a longtime resident of that community. The funeral was held Monday morning at St. Patrick's cemetery.
