Hattie May Stubbs was born in the little town of Lacey, Iowa, near Oskaloosa, on August 18, 1874. She was the daughter of William and Olive Stanley Stubbs. A brother, Alfred W. Stubbs, joined this little family. After the death of her father and the remarriage of her mother, another daughter, Ethel Hockett was born.

After her family had moved to Earlham Hattie met and later married Jehu Wilson on March 22, 1892. Three sons were born to this union, Frank J., Hugh A., and Marion S.

They made their home on the family farm north of Earlham until the death of her husband in the fall of 1941. Hattie lived with her sons for a while and then moved to a room in the Parkview Nursing Home in November 1954. Here she did much to help and cheer others who made their home there also. But best of all, she was near her church where it was easy for her to attend the various functions that were held there.

It was such an occasion as this that God saw fit to call her to her Heavenly Home on Sunday afternoon December 30, 1962, at the age of 88 years, 4 months and 12 days. (Buried in the Earlham Cemetery)

Hattie was the happiest when she had her family about her. Those who will miss her the most include the three sons and their wives, Frank and Olive and Marion and Dorthy of Earlham and Hugh and Georgia of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. Also her grandchildren, Martha Koboldt, Helen Ludwick, Floyd Wilson and Mary and Marjorie Wilson and her great grandchildren, Betty, Bruce and Nancy Koboldt and Bonnie Ludwick. She is also survived by a niece, Olive Swinford of Tucson, Arizona, who made her home with her aunt for a number of years, and her sister-in-law, Mrs. A. W. Stubbs of Mason City, Iowa and other nieces and nephews.

Services Wednesday for Hattie Wilson

Hattie Wilson passed away suddenly on Sunday afternoon, December 30. She had been in apparent good health for her 88 years. On Saturday evening, she had attended a belated Christmas gift exchange with her family at the home of her son, Marion Wilson, and had enjoyed herself immensely. On Sunday morning, she attended Sunday School and church as usual and returned to the Parkview Home to eat her dinner.

In the afternoon, she wished to attend the open house that was being held at the Friends Church in honor of Bernard Cook, as he retired from his mail route. Hattie walked out the door of Parkview to go to the church as the ladies there had seen her do so many, many times. When she arrived at her destination, she sat down and wrote her name in the guest book and at that instant she was called to her Heavenly Home, leaving quickly and quietly as she had always wished that she might.

The funeral service was held in the Earlham Friends Church on Wednesday, January 2, at 2 o’clock. The pastor L. Willard Reynolds was in charge. Gertrude Conrad presided at the organ. Casket bearers included Beryl Kenworthy, Roland Conrad, Wayne Thomas, Russell Hester, Wallace Jackson and Fred Fry. Burial was in the Earlham cemetery.
