RAYMOND SMITH

Raymond Smith was born in Penn township near Earlham on May 28, 1886 and died at his home in Earlham on June 4, 1964, at the age of 78 years and one week. He was the second youngest of eight children, born to Milton A. Smith and Elizabeth Tanner Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers, Fred, Asa, Clarence, Claude and Chester.

He attended a rural school and completed a commercial course at Earlham Academy in 1908.

He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church attending the Penn Center and Earlham churches.

He farmed all his life in Madison county until his retirement last fall, when he and his wife moved to a home in Earlham.

On February 28, 1912, he was wed to Martha Minerva DeVault. From this marriage was born a daughter, Mabel Olive, but his wife passed away on their first anniversary, February 28, 1913.

He remarried again on August 22, 1917 to Grace Cade and had two sons, Dale Edwin and Willard Cecil. Mr. Smith again lost his wife on May 14, 1933.

Bertha Ellen Alexander became his wife on February 21, 1938.

He is survived by his wife as well his three children, six living grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

One granddaughter died in infancy.

He was a loving husband and a devoted father. He loved his home and was a lover of flowers.

His oldest brother William T. Smith and younger sister, Pearl G. Price also survive him along with a host of other relatives and friends.
