Death of Mrs. Ellen McCollum

Mrs. Ellen McCollum who has been in poor health for several months, died early this morning, Sept. 1 at her home in the northeast part of town. She was 81 years of age and has lived in this community for many years. She is survived by her son, Harold.

Funeral services will be conducted at Tidrick’s funeral home on Friday, Sept. 2 at 2 o’clock by Rev. Paul M. Fowler and burial will be made in the Winterset cemetery. More details of her life will be given in next week’s issue of the Madisonian.

Ellen Thompson was born in Ireland in June of 1846. She came to America when a young woman, and for many years has been a resident of Madison county.

She was married to John I. McCollom, and they adopted one son, Harold McCollom.

Mr. McCollom passed away in 1922, and since then she and Harold have made their home in Winterset.

She has been for many years, a faithful Christian and a devoted member of the Winterset Presbyterian church. While living on the farm, when she was past 70 years of age, she often walked three miles to attend the services, and from her meager savings, she always had something to give to the church.

She was ever a kind neighbor and helpful friend. In the last months of suffering, which she bore so uncomplainingly, the church she served so faithfully, and the neighbors she had been kind to where in some measure able to make some return by tenderly helping to care for her.

She passed away in her home September 1, aged 81 years. She leaves beside her son, Harold, other relatives and many friends.

Rev. Paul Fowler conducted the funeral services at Tidrick’s funeral home, Friday afternoon, September 2, and the interment was in the Winterset cemetery.
