Local Song Writer Dies

John Herring, who spent his early life in Winterset but later rose to International fame as composer of popular music, died Monday, Aug. 5, at his summer home in Davis Park, N. J.

Under the professional name of John J. Rox, Herring was known as the composer of "It's A Big, Wide, Wonderful World", and other songs. He also wrote special music for two Broadway revues.

He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Herring of Winterset. His father was a partner in the operation of the drug store now known as Montross pharmacy.

Herring was about 55 years of age at his death. He was a graduate of the Winterset high school with the class of 1920, and of Drake university in Des Moines. He studied music in Vienna, Austria, for four years.
