John M. Brittain was born in Missouri, Sept. 7, 1844, and died in Madison county, Iowa, Dec. 25, 1913, at the age of 79 years 3 months and 18 days.
He enlisted in the war, from Kansas, and at the close of the war, served in the regular army, after which he came to Madison county. Soon after, he went to Mary county, Missouri, which has since been his home.
In 1870, he married Margaret Elliott. To them were born seven children, six of whom are living, the wife and one daughter having preceded him in death. He had been in his usual robust health until Sunday evening, when he was suddenly stricken, and died Wednesday night. Though temporarily away from home, he fell among friends.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Baber of Van Meter and the body was accompanied to St. James, the old home, by John and Robert Brittain, nephews.
