ALCY L. BRITTAIN

Alcy L. Brittain, daughter of Taylor and Elizabeth Jennings, was born at Van Meter, September 6, 1884 and passed away at the Maple Lin Manor in Earlham on December 4, 1968 at the age of 84 years, 2 months and 28 days.

She spent her early years in and around the community where she was born. Aside from keeping house for her brothers, she taught country school for a short time.

She was united in marriage to Joseph E. Brittain on July 4, 1909 at Van Meter. To this union, a son, Clyde was born. In 1917 they moved to their new farmstead where Clyde now lives. In 1956 they moved to Earlham. Her last couple of years were spent at Maple Lin Manor here in Earlham.

Alcy was alway a busy person. For several years she cared for her husband, always being at his side. She was her happiest tending to her wide variety of flowers. She always looked forward to the visits from her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Alcy was a long-time member of the Earlham United Methodist church, also a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service. As long as her health permitted, she was a faithful attender.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Joe; her parents; three brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by her son, Clyde, and his wife Mildred, three grandchildren, Marlin and Keith Brittain of Earlham and Janet Williamson of Cedar Falls; and six great grandchildren; by two sisters, Ellen Smith of Van Meter and Daisy Baldwin of Woodward; and by a host of relatives and friends.

Services were held Saturday, December 7 at 2:00 p.m. in the Earlham Methodist Church with the Rev. Ward Young officiating. Robert G. Fisher was the soloist accompanied by Mrs. Neale Caudron on the organ. Mrs. Josephine Golightly and Mrs. Gordon Standing assisted with the flowers.

The casket bearers were Wilbur Herron, Kenneth Thompson, LLoyd McClurg, Donald Ross, Gordon Standing and Dale Mills. Interment was in the Earlham Cemetery.
