Wednesday, November 13, 1918Death of Miss Francene Smith
Miss Francene Smith, youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Smith died Friday noon at the home of her parents after a week's illness. She arrived home Thursday evening of the preceding week from her school work in Osceola, where, for the second time, quarantine had been declared. On the next day, Miss Smith developed a mild case of influenza which was quickly checked. However, an affection of the heart, which had appeared in childhood as the result of severe illness became acute. Her condition became precarious on last Wednesday and rapidly became worse, the end coming after great suffering. Funeral services were held at ten o'clock Sunday morning, conducted by Rev. Jackson Giddens.
Miss Smith was born in Winterset, graduated from our high school and completed four years of study at Simpson college. she began her chosen work as teacher in the Guthrie Center high School, then went to Osceola, where she was serving her second year as a faculty member.
Her passing at the early age of 26 years, when her life work had just begun, has brought deep regret to those who have known her and her family during her lifetime. Her character blended firmness with gentleness in a manner rarely found in the young. Her quiet, deep nature was brightened by her intensely happy disposition and she died as she had lived, with a smile on her lips and a word of gratitude to those who ministered to her.
